Presbyterian Healthcare Services Turns 104 and Rust Medical Center Celebrates First Birthday

October 22, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Tomorrow, October 24, Presbyterian Healthcare Services officially marks 104 years of service to New Mexico and Presbyterian Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho, Presbyterian’s newest hospital, celebrates its first birthday.

In 1908, the Reverend Hugh Cooper founded the Southwestern Presbyterian Sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. It was a tiny, five-bedroom cottage in Albuquerque where Presbyterian Hospital on Central Avenue still stands today. Now, Presbyterian is New Mexico’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system with eight hospitals across the state, a medical group and a health plan.

This week, Rust Medical Center welcomed its 1,000th baby. Since opening, Rust Medical Center has performed almost 4,000 surgeries, seen more than 28,000 patients in the emergency room and admitted 4,624 patients to the hospital.
