Heart Center At Presbyterian Among First In Country To Implant New MRI Safe Cardioverter Defibrillator

Release Date:

September 22, 2015

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Heart Center at Presbyterian is among the first in the country to implant the Evera MRI™ SureScan® ICD System, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) system approved for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

“Presbyterian is leading the way by investing in technologies that are making standard procedures safer for patients,” said Dr. Robert Federici, medical director, The Heart Center at Presbyterian. “Patients with ICDs are often older adults with other serious medical conditions that require an MRI for diagnosis. This device allows us to treat cardiac arrest and enables patients to access MRIs.”

Many patients rely on ICDs to detect irregular heartbeats and deliver life-saving therapy to restore a normal heartbeat. Until now, patients with ICDs have not been able to receive MRI scans because of potential interactions between the MRI and the device function, which might result in risk to the patient.

More than one-third of patients with ICDs are likely to need an MRI within four years. The Heart Center at Presbyterian implants approximately 175 ICDs annually.

The Evera MRI™ SureScan® ICD System from Medtronic is the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ICD system for use with MRI scans on any part of the body without positioning restrictions.
