Presbyterian Hospital Earns Prestigious Baby-Friendly® Designation

Release Date:

April 22, 2015

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In recognition of its commitment to exceptional care and lifelong health benefits for mothers and babies, Presbyterian Hospital has earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly® Hospital designation for five years from Baby-Friendly USA, Inc.

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. recognizes hospitals and birthing facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding.

According to Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., breastfeeding has many important benefits. Breast milk gives infants the most complete nutrition possible. Studies show that women who breastfeed have decreased risks of breast and ovarian cancer, anemia, and osteoporosis. Another benefit is that families who breastfeed save money on health care costs and related time lost to care for sick children.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized as a Baby-Friendly hospital,” said Carolyn Green, Administrator, The Women’s Center at Presbyterian. “From ensuring our patients have all the information they need during their pregnancy to our donor milk program to support our neonatal intensive care unit babies, this achievement demonstrates the commitment of Presbyterian Hospital’s staff to support healthier families.”

To qualify as Baby-Friendly®, a hospital must demonstrate that it has implemented 10 evidence-based practices that support breastfeeding. Baby-Friendly® hospitals and birthing facilities must adhere to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding to receive and retain the designation.

Sponsored by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the United States accrediting body charged with implementing the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. There are 251 active Baby-Friendly® hospitals and birth centers in 46 states and the District of Columbia.
